KAROO NEWS - The Chris Hani District Municipality expressed its sadness surrounding the recent death of Cllr Nyameka Goniwe, speaker of the Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality and wife of the late Matthew Goniwe, one of the slain Cradock Four.
According to a statement by Chris Hani Mayor, Wongama Gala, Nyameka died on Saturday after a short illness.
“Her passing marks one of the most painful moments in our district,” Gala said. “We have lost a colleague, a friend, a great leader and a patriot whose life was dedicated to the betterment of others.”
Nyameka joined local government in 2011, as executive mayor of Inxuba Yethemba. In 2016, she became a councillor and served in the Municipal Public Accounts Committee. She was later elected as Member of the Mayoral Committee, and elected as the Portfolio Committee for Health and Community Services. Her last post would be that of Council Speaker for Inxuba Yethemba.
“We have lost a pioneer, a trailblazer and a woman of extraordinary fortitude,” Gala added. The municipality expressed their condolences and sympathy to Nyameka’s children, Nobuzwe an Nyaniso, as well as to her community. “She will be greatly missed by so many around the country and will remain in our hearts.”
