GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The community of Graaff-Reinet is in mourning, following the recent passing of school principal, community leader, role model and true gentleman, Trevor Moos.
News of Moos's death broke on 17 October, prior to which he was hospitalised for Covid-19. Hundreds of community members took to social media to express their sorrow over the loss of Moos, who was a well-known and loved figure in his community.
"He was an inspiring human to all who knew him. A profound heart has stopped beating and a soul with integrity ascended to heaven," said Moos' cousin, Enrico Daniels.
Moos spent his childhood in Graaff-Reinet, where he matriculated from Spandau Secondary School. He obtained a diploma in education from Bridgeton College in Oudtshoorn, and started his teaching career at Lettie de Klerk Primary School in Nieu-Bethesda in 1986.
In 1991, Moos joined Narsingstreet Primary School in Graaff-Reinet, where he became principal in August 2019.
Moos was also a multi-talented sportsman, who played rugby for Hampshire RFC, and cricket for Shamrocks CC and United CC. He served as president of both clubs, and would go on to be Match Secretary of the Central Karoo Cricket Union, Secretary of the Central Karoo Cricket Union, and Secretary of the EP Midlands Cricket Board.
He was also an Eastern Province Cricket (EPC) Board Member, and represented the Sarah Baartman District until his passing. "He always acted in the best interest of the game, and will be sorely missed," said Donovan May, president of EPC.
An inspiring teacher, Moos shared his love for sport with his learners. "We enjoyed it so much when [Mr Moos] was on weekend duty at Narsingstreet's hostel," shared former learner, Wesley Sondag. "When he was on duty you knew there'd be cricket, table tennis and movies."
Kayline Mabee, also a former learner, shared that Moos was a father figure to many.
"The Graaff-Reinet community has suffered a great loss."

Many locals will also know Moos from the Acacia Street Christmas Lights project, for which he was a dedicated programme director. The event, a well-loved tradition in Kroonvale, aims to raise funds for the local Cancer Association.
On Heritage Day this year, Moos invited the Advertiser to his office, where he discussed the achievements of his learners, and introduced the school's new teachers. His passion for the school and his community was evident. The Advertiser would return at a later stage for an interview about Moos's long career at Narsingstreet – we regret that we will now never have this opportunity.
Moos is survived by Elsabe, his wife of 21 years, their children, and a large circle of friends and family members.
