GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Slow Food Karoo and the Slow Food Chefs' Alliance are planning to celebrate the greatest food export of the Karoo with an annual event that celebrates our wonderful Karoo lamb.
The inaugural event will be held in Graaff Reinet on Saturday, 27 October, and will be known as the Great Karoo Lamb Braai.
Slow Food is an international food movement that has been going since the 1980s with the sole aim of advocating good, clean and fair food for all. www.slowfood.com The group of like-minded chefs involved in the two groups will each prepare and serve different cuts of Karoo lamb, from nose to tail, all cooked in the great outdoors and over flames or hot coals.
This event will also help to kick off "International Thank a Farmer month" and is a fundraising event for the Slow Food Karoo Chefs' Alliance.
This will help generate funds to help pay for the recent working trip to Italy by a small group of local farmers to promote the existence of this very important food movement, where they proudly promoted Karoo produce and particularly Karoo lamb and mutton as part of our food heritage. Event organiser Rose Wright is very enthusiastic about the event.
"The Karoo has its wonderful farmers to thank for our most famous food export, Karoo lamb, and we also need to thank a farmer for every meal we have. As farmers form the backbone of our communities in the Karoo, it made sense to celebrate these wonderful people and animals for all they do for us".
She went on to explain that to cook the lamb to perfection, they chose some of the most famous braai masters in the Karoo. " We asked them to prepare some tasty and innovative lamb dishes over the braai using various cuts of lamb, and have them ready for us all for a lazy afternoon braai" she added. Chefs participating in the event are Cradock's very own writer and cook Tony Jackman, author of Food Stuff, who will be working his magic with the lamb forequarters.
A team from the popular Muller house in Graaff Reinet will also be present and will be tackling the lamb hindquarters.
Well- known local chef and bestselling author Gordon Wright completes the line- up with a fun collaboration with Buccara Wildlife Reserve. They will be introducing the brand new and innovative "Bucci burger" concept.
Klub Libertas in Bourke Street will host the event and it will be a great afternoon for the whole family with a mini market, braai and a jumping castle for the kids on the lovely lawn, as well as lucky draws. The event will run from midday until 16:00. The legendary Boets Nel of De Krans Wines will be on hand to offer tastings and wine sales at cellar door prices and Libertas will have a full bar running. Sponsors Buccara Wildlife Reserve and Tyremart will help ensure that this inaugural event is an event not to be missed.
Tickets are R150 per person, with reduced prices for children, and include a meal and wine tasting. For more information and bookings, please email tasteotkaroo@gmail.com.
