GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The last week, from 2-9 April, has been relatively quiet on the crime front in Graaff-Reinet.
The most serious crime was one of rape and attempted murder. A 39-year-old woman from Umasizakhe alleges that she was held captive in a house for seven days, during which time she was repeatedly raped and assaulted. Neighbours became suspicious, and went to the house, where they found the badly injured woman. She was taken to Midland Hospital for medical attention, and doctors there reported the case to the police. A 20-year-old man has been arrested.
There were two cases of business burglary. The first was in Factory Street. When the complainant arrived at his business on 3 April, he found that an undisclosed amount of cash was missing, and a 35 inch CCTV had been taken.
The total value given is R200 000.
In the second, near the Collie Koeberg Stadium, on returning to his workplace on 4 April the complainant found a door had been ripped off its hinges, and a toilet suite, classic stop taps, wooden door, a bath and pillar taps, worth approximately R17 000, had been stolen.
According to the complainant in the next case, he parked his car at a house in Umasizakhe at 22.00 on 2 April, and at 07:50 the next morning he noticed an electrical wire handing from his car boot. When he examined the vehicle, he found that the Rocky AMP, and three Pioneer speakers had been removed from his vehicle. The vehicle’s boot had been forced open. The value of the missing items is R3 000.
There were also two residential burglaries.
The first occurred at a house in Naude Street on 5 February. The woman left home for an hour, and on her return at 13:30 she found that the front door had been damaged, and jewellery to the value of R50 000 was missing.
The second break-in happened while the owner was away, sometime between 2 April and 7 April. On her return, she found the front door had been forced open, and cash, a kettle and cold meats were missing, together valued at R2 500. There are no suspects at this stage.
