Roses of Hope for Cancer project: 18 October
On the day, which falls in Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the lawns of the Groot Kerk in Graaff-Reinet will be transformed into a rose wonderland from 7am until 6pm. The project, initiated by the Graaff-Reinet Cancer Association, is taking hands with residents to plant 2 000 artificial pink roses attached to sosatie sticks. The rose closest to a predetermined secret spot will win its owner R5 000.
"This project is truly going to be a beautiful one and the public is encouraged to order their roses as soon as possible to avoid disappointment," said project coordinator Margie Parkes.
Orders for roses, which have been sponsored by Merino Pharmacy, can be placed at Blue Magnolia Nursery, Merino Pharmacy or Brian Bands for R20 each. All roses are numbered and must be collected on the day at the church where they will be planted by their purchaser. For those out of town or unable to attend, a cancer survivor will plant the rose.
"There will be small cards available for those wishing to write down the names of loved ones who have gone through the cancer experience, which can be attached to their rose," said Parkes. At 6pm the secret spot will be revealed and the winner of the prize announced. Participants may take their roses home, or leave them for the Graaff-Reinet Cancer Association to reuse.
