ABERDEEN NEWS - Once again, a constant stream of vehicles, mostly taxis, is flowing into the Eastern Cape at the R61 roadblock outside Aberdeen.
Many wonder how those that are overloaded or have incorrect documents get as far as Aberdeen.
More than 900 people were screened on Thursday night, and by 10am one of those working at the roadblock estimated that about 1 500 people had passed the checkpoint.
“Many of the taxis were full, and this week we have also seen more children in the taxis- the people think that the police will not be as strict on the children,” said the worker.
Several local farmers were once again affected, saying that it is much busier than last weekend. Those coming into Aberdeen from the Camdeboo conservancy area battled to join the main road, as the taxis were queued bumper-to-bumper and most were reluctant to allow the farmers into the queue.
“Last weekend, the police allowed us to bypass the queue and drive the short distance to the roadblock on the wrong side of the road,” said one farmer, adding that this week, when he did the same, police at the roadblock told him he would need to go back and join the back of the line.
In three days, more than 40 cases of fraud have been opened against those with incorrect permits.
