STEYTLERVILLE NEWS - Members of the Steylerville community spent time Wednesday (20 May) removing the debris from the previous days’ protests.
This was organised by Neil Hendricks, who with six other men cleared away the burnt tyres, rocks and general rubbish that had been left in the streets. He took all the rubbish to the town’s dumping site in his own bakkie.
“I am leader in our community, and like to express my leadership and keep a clean and safe environment for the community,” he explained.
One of the men who helped was Samuel Klaas, who is still angry at the perceived lack of communication between the construction company and Public Works with the local community’s disaster committee. “We discussed the problem with the contractors, and they agreed to leave — then the police interfered,” he said. “But now we are happy, the workers have gone, so we must clear up. It is our town and we are proud of it.”
