Update
GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - In response to the allegations about the state of the holding cells in Graaf-Reinet, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, the SAPS Spokesperson for the Sarah Baartman District, explained that the sewerage system for SAPS in Graaff-Reinet was built in 1976, and the last maintenance was on 7 July 2021.
“There is no adequate flushing system due to the unavailability of parts for the current old and outdated flushing system. However, no persons are detained in the three holding cells affected by inadequate flushing systems. Service delivery is not affected, as there are other toilet facilities for members and the public.”
According to him, a procurement process is underway for a supplier to upgrade the sewerage system at the station.
Simultaneously, another process is underway that will tend to the structural reparations to the locking systems, showers, drinking fountains, and other maintenance issues.
WO Nkohli admitted that the station experienced some challenges with the laundry services last year, but stated that there are new blankets at the station and a contingency plan is in place to ensure that the blankets are clean.
His response follows after the DA Member of Parliament and Constituency Leader for the Dr Beyers Naudé, Samantha Graham-Maré, went to the holding cells on an oversight inspection after she received complaints about toilets that are overflowing and established that the holding cells are not fit for detention purposes.
