GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Graaff-Reinet locals awaiting spring were in for a surprise on 21 October 1953, when the town recorded its heaviest snowfall in 67 years.
"The whole town was under four inches (over 10 cm), and trees and branches collapsed under the weight," read a snippet by the Daily Dispatch at the time, sent to the Advertiser by Jeanine Ihlenfeldt.
On 22 October 1953, following continuous rainfall in East London, the Dispatch could only publish one page, due to power failures.
"Without power, it was not possible to produce a normal issue of the newspaper," the paper stated, as machines for type-setting and printing were, as it is today, electrically operated.
"We crave the indulgence of readers and advertiser and hope tomorrow to resume normal publication."
Boy, we wonder what the editorial team of 1953 would say of load shedding!
