GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - It was reported last week that game hunter Michael Cockburn of Kimberley had been arrested for fraud, after allegedly taking money for game that he was selling on the internet but did not deliver.
The Aberdeen farmer was unable to get a refund or the animals.
According to Aberdeen detective branch commander W/O Willie van Zyl, Cockburn was sentenced to 18 months in prison at the Aberdeen Magistrate’s court last Thursday, and ordered to repay the R15 000 paid by the farmer before the end of June 2019.
After the initial article about Cockburn’s crimes was published, the Aberdeen detectives received calls from several other victims from all over South Africa.
He was also named-and-shamed on a social media site, where several Free State farmers also claimed to have been victims of non-delivery by Cockburn.
One woman claimed that the wildebeest she received from him had many broken bones.
Police expected more cases to be opened against Cockburn.
