GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — On 22 February, Scouts throughout the world celebrated the birth of Robert Baden Powell, Scouting’s founder.
Scouting started with a camp on Brownsea Island, off the southern coast of Britain, in 1907, where Baden Powell taught the Scouts survival skills and living in the wild. Scouting in Graaff-Reinet started three years later, in 1910, also with a camp of 8 Scouts, on a site where the Nqweba Dam wall is now built.
At Friday’s Assembly, the Union Scouts, under the leadership of Troop Scouter, Bruce Maree, celebrated the birth of Baden Powell. In figures released from World Scout Headquarters in Geneva, last weekend, Scouts between the ages of 11 and 18 years old now number 40.89 million and growing at a rate of 2.29% per year.
Being in the Scout movement is a light for the world to see. It indicates a willingness to put service before self, by accepting the Scout laws and promise which 40.29 million Scouts have done as a way of life.
Union High School has produced many Springbok Scouts, with Cameron Muir currently working towards this achievement under the guidance of Bruce Maree.
