EASTERN CAPE NEWS - The Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene, recently conducted the conclusion of the induction period/roadshow of new constables in the Joe Gqabi District.
WO Majola Nkohli says that the roadshow had been strategically planned to coincide with the festive season operations, and that in some districts in the province, it is still taking place.
Mene addressed approximately 200 new constables at the Police Sports Club Hall in Aliwal North on Tuesday 9 January. She warned the new constables not to become involved in corruption and misuse of state resources.
"I do not want to receive any complaint of corruption or any other misconduct from your group of police officials. As senior managers, we took time to address you on the number of challenges, which had unfortunately derailed some of our colleagues from the path, and eventually saw some of them languishing in jail."
Nkohli says that the day, accompanied with heavy rain, did not dampen the spirits of the foot soldiers, who were deployed at various hotspot areas which they patrolled with senior managers, to enhance police visibility. Several roadblocks were also manned in the Joe Gqabi and Chris Hani districts.
Several motorists were fined for traffic offences ranging from driving without a licence to overloading, with fines amounting to about R15 000 in the two districts.
During those operations, the two districts reported no serious criminal cases.
Mene and her senior managers played an active role in overseeing all the operations throughout the province, as Operation Shanela (Operation Shanela is a multi-disciplinary high-density operation that aims to reduce contact and violent crimes in crime hotspots) was running concurrently with the festive season operations.
Their hands-on approach not only enhanced operational efficiency, but also served as an impetus to heighten morale among police members.
The Eastern Cape received a total of 987 new constables, who were having their first-hand experience of being involved in operations.
