EASTERN CAPE NEWS - The Eastern Cape Department of Transport is urging road users and especially motorists, to remain on high alert as the volume of traffic - mainly outbound traffic is expected to spike significantly in some of the province’s major roads.
This, as many holiday makers head back to their workplaces starting from this weekend.
Unathi Binqose, spokesperson for the Department of Transport says that they have also assured the public that traffic law enforcement officers and all the rapid response teams have been strategically deployed to man some of the main routes that are expected to carry the bulk of the traffic load.
Those include the over 750-kilometer-long portion of the N2 road in the Eastern Cape Province, running from Tsitsikama to Mt Ayliff, connecting the Eastern Cape with both the Western Cape and Kwa Zulu-Natal to the east as well as the notorious R61 road that stretches from Beaufort West in the Western Cape to Port Shepstone in Kwa Zulu-Natal, through the Eastern Cape (EC) towns of Graaff Reinet, Aberdeen, Komani and Mthatha, among others.
The N6 connecting the EC with northern province’s such as Gauteng will also be of great interest.
Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Xolile Nqatha has commended road users for the role they have played on the roads in the province on days leading up to Christmas and the New Year, urging them to double their efforts as we enter the final lap of the 2023 Festive Season Arrive Alive campaign.
“It must be said most road users in the province have been exemplary. It was just a handful of those who wanted to be a law unto themselves and many of those have been dealt with. Many have abided by the rules of the road, and we commend them for that, and we are calling on them to keep up that level of responsible road use so we can all be safe on the roads,” said Nqatha.
