GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - A precautionary boil water notice was issued today, Friday, October 6, by the Dr Beyers Naudé Municipality for all of:
- Nieu-Bethesda
- Pienaarsig
- Day Hospital - Graaff-Reinet.
The notice states that:
Water can still be used to bath or wash.
Water should not be swallowed or allowed to enter the eyes, nose or mouth.
Children and the disabled should have their baths supervised to ensure water is not ingested.
Time spent bathing should be minimized.
According to the notice the risk of illness is minimal, however, the municipality's Engineering and Planning Directorate has been informed about the water's Micro Results and they are responding to the problem identified.
Re-sampling of water will be conducted next week, October 10.
According to the municipality, this notice is only issued as a preventative measure to protect public health.
Here are a few examples of ways to disinfecting water:
- Boil the water
- For clear tap water: put eight drops of unscented common household bleach that has 5 to 6 present active ingredients into 1l tap water. Shake the container to mix the water. Allow the water to stand for 30 minutes before consuming the water. The water may have a chlorine odour or taste.
- For cloudy tap water: put 16 drops of unscented common household bleach that has 5 to 6 percent active ingredients into 1l tap water. Shake the container to mix the water. Allow to the water to stand for 30 minutes before consuming.
- Water needs to be boiled whether the consumer has a water filtration system in their refrigerator or not.
