GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Convictions secured in the past week include some harsher sentences for murder than in previous cases.
One suspect was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, and another to 10 years. For housebreaking and theft, a convicted suspect was given 12 months imprisonment, of which six months is suspended for three years. The person was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The other convictions all involved suspended sentences. For assault (common), one person was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years, and another to six months’ imprisonment, suspended for five years. Possession of dagga led to a fine of R1 000 or one month imprisonment, suspended for three years.
The suspect convicted of fraud was ordered to make a monthly payment of R1 500 to the victim, and received a sentence of three years’ imprisonment, suspended for five years.
A total of 18 arrests were made in the last week by SAPS in Graaff-Reinet and Aberdeen.
Seven people were arrested for assault, of which three were for the more violent assault GBH. For drugs, one arrest was made for possession of dagga, four for possession of Mandrax and tik, and one for dealing in drugs. One person was held on a warrant of arrest.
Two men were held for stock theft, one suspect for shoplifting, and one for malicious damage to property.
There were a further 13 liquor related arrests, where the suspects were arrested for being drunk and disorderly.
Goods confiscated during the last week were mostly drugs: 129 Mandrax tablets, 200g dagga, and 10g tik. One and a half sheep carcasses and a bicycle were also seized.
