ABERDEEN NEWS - The board of Aberdeen Monica's Day Care (AMD) hosted their first open day on Saturday 19 August for parents with children between the ages of 18 months to 5 years old.
Rudy Jacobs, chairperson of the board of AMD, a newly registered ECD-NPO says: "With our NPO now registered – which is a first of its kind in Aberdeen and surrounds – it was time for us to inform parents of our progress and our future plans for developing AMD into a proper Early Childhood Development Centre and to host a fund raiser".
Nicholas Skosana, vice-treasurer of the board, confirms that, with a banking business account opened, the NPO could host their first fundraiser. The day was filled with fun and pleasure for parents and children, and included an information session, discussions, games and something to eat and drink.
According to Jacobs and Skosana the board has officially appointed AMD's first two employees: Monica Webster, founder of AMD, as centre manager and Nomathamsanqa Kaptein, vice-secretary of the board as general assistant. Jacobs and Allan Webster, additional special board members, point out that daily volunteers act as sport coaches for the children at the centre.
"It is totally informal at this point, but we have huge problems in our town with young children falling victim to drug abuse. One of the best ways to get them away from potential drug abuse, is to get them involved in sports from the earliest ages possible."
Jacobs emphasises that AMD also offers daily transport for children to and from the premises.
