ABERDEEN NEWS — Illegal dumping is a big problem in Aberdeen, with piles of rubbish dumped indiscriminately in many areas, especially near the river.
This matter was raised several times at community meetings, and towards the end of last year, Ward 7 councillor Rudy Jacobs asked the municipality for sign boards to be erected in the relevant areas.
These boards arrived in Aberdeen more than six months ago, and just sat in the municipal office store room. Cllr Jacobs repeatedly requested that these sign boards be erected, and gave the administrator a list of “hot spots” where litter was being dumped.
The length of time that the signs have been standing around is clearly shown in the Camdeboo Municipality logo!
At last, some of the signs prohibiting the dumping of refuse have been erected, but to Cllr Jacobs’ dismay, not one is in Ward 7 in the designated areas, but they are all in Lotusville and Thembalesizwe townships, which are in Ward 1.
Cllr Jacobs referred the matter to Chantal Ngqoza, Manager of Community Services at the Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality, who responded that she had indeed given instructions to supervisor Japie Beukes for the boards to be put up in town at the identified problem areas. It is unclear why these instructions were not followed, but Ngqoza has repeated her request to administrator Clive Kombani to address the problem in the town.
