KAROO NEWS - The Dr Beyers Naudé municipal budget adopted for 2020/2021 by the council held few surprises, with only minor changes to the widely-circulated proposed budget.
The increases for the next financial year that will affect most residents are:
- 6% increase in property rates, water, sanitation, refuse
- 9% increase in electricity, as approved by NERSA.
Rates: this will be based on new valuations, with a uniform tariff per category across all towns
Water: the baseline tariff increases by 50c, and all other stepped rates will increase by 6%.
The drought tariff will still be in effect.
Sewerage: this will increase by just under R7 per month
Refuse: a new R13 environmental health levy is added, which with the 6% increase, raises the tariff to R138,91.
Those who qualify for indigent support (with an income no more than two SASSA grants) will continue to receive 50kwh electricity and 6kl water free, and no charge is payable for rates, sewerage or refuse.
Various expenditure increases were detailed, with the most significant being a 400% increase in the budget for repairs and maintenance, from R7-million to R28-million.
Salaries for municipal employees will rise by 6,25%.
