GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Following a post on a local Facebook page this afternoon that claims Graaff-Reinet’s drinking water is contaminated by raw sewage, the Dr. Beyers Naudé Municipality issued a statement this evening disputing these claims, stating:
“The municipality confirms that there is a sewage spillage on the N9. It can further be assured that the spillage does not flow into the Nqweba Dam and also, because of the low levels of the dam due to the water crisis, the use of the dam water are no longer used.
"The whole of Graaff-Reinet is being supplied with water from boreholes. The municipality is working on the sewage spillage.”
The original Facebook post, posted by the page ‘Grand Karoo Graaff-Reinet News and Events’ which went viral this afternoon, reads as follows:
“WARNING: DO NOT CONSUME GRAAFF-REINET TAP WATER
NOT EVEN TO BRUSH TEETH, WASH DISHES, OR SHOWER!
Raw SEWAGE can be seen on the N9, running from Umasizakhe into the Nqweba Dam.
The Municipality have been using water from the dam, along with borehole water for Municipal water... in your TAPS!
Graaff-Reinet’s filtration system is not operating fully.
Our tap water is green/brown in colour and stinks.
People who have been drinking this water have been violently ill.
GRAAFF-REINET MUNICIPALITY are refusing to comment.
BOTTOM LINE: GRAAFF-REINET RESIDENTS HAVE BEEN CONSUMING AND BATHING IN SEWAGE!
If anyone can dispute these facts, please do so URGENTLY and PUBLICLY!”
More will be reported on this should more information become available.
