GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - There was a mixed bag of cases opened by Graaff-Reinet SAPS during the week from 29 January to 5 February.
There were two cases of robbery, where the victims were threatened with knives. On 29 January at about 07:45, the complainant and her brother were walking on the Jansenville Road, about 6km from Graaff Reinet. Two men emerged from the bushes and robbed them their cellphones, identity books and bank cards after threatening the woman with knives. The value of the stolen property is R3 500. The complainant in the second case was standing outside his home in Cypress Street on 3 February at 16.30.
He alleges that an unknown suspect came up to him, and after threatening him with a knife, took his Samsung Galaxy cellphone, valued at R1 600.
On 25 January at 15.00 a 31-year-old male was found by neighbours in Republiek Street, Kroonvale, where he had committed suicide by hanging himself with a rope from a tree. A case of suicide has been opened by local police and is under investigation. No other information can be released because of the sensitivity of the case.
Goods to the value of R11 000 were stolen in a robbery from a tyre repair business premises during the night of 28 January. The complainant reported that when he locked up at 18:00, all was in order, but when he returned the next morning he found that the business had been broken into. A hydraulic blue jack, 3 ton jack and a red compressor had been taken.
One case of assault GBH was opened. At about 15:00 on 2 February, a man was at the Waste Transfer Station with his mother, scavenging through the dumped material. Whilst looking through the rubbish, he was attacked from behind for no apparent reason by a fellow worker. The suspect, who is known, stabbed the complainant on the rear side of his body and fled from the scene.
A house in Graaff-Reinet was broken into during the night of 29 January after a sliding door was forced open. The next morning, the owner found the door open, and her black 32” flat screen television (valued at R5 500) was missing.
A case of reckless and negligent driving was opened after an accident in Market Square on 30 January. The police received a report about the accident at about 07:30, and when the police official arrived at the scene of the accident, he spoke to the driver of the vehicle, who said that he had collided with a pedestrian. The victim suffered injuries to his head.
On 2 February at 05:30, a member of Graaf-Reinet police was patrolling in Pou Street near Selfbou, Graaff-Reinet, when he found a 22-year-old man acting suspiciously. The man was carrying a 10 ton bottle jack and a wheel spanner, and had no plausible explanation for being in possession of these items. He was arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen property.
Also in the Selfbou area, a truck battery was stolen during the night of 31 January. The complainant had parked his vehicle in Bree Street, near Selfbou, but discovered the next morning that the battery had been taken. The value of the battery is R1 600.
A man was detained for dealing in dagga in Caledon Street on 29 January at about 10:00. While busy with crime prevention duties in the area, a member of Graaff Reinet Police spotted three men sitting in front of a liquor store in Caledon Street. One of the men jumped up and ran away after throwing down a plastic packet which he had in his hands. The constable gave chase and apprehended the suspect. On inspecting the bag, the constable found it to contain 0.129 grams of dagga, worth R1 275.
There were also two drug-related successes in Somerset East in the last week that the Graaff-Reinet SAPS cluster would like to bring to the attention of the community.
The first, a relatively minor offence, happened on 29 January at about 12:15. A member of Somerset East police was informed about a suspect who was in possession of dagga, with a description of the clothing he was wearing. A man fitting the description of the suspect was later seen, and on searching the suspect the police official found 782 grams of dagga. He was arrested for possession of dagga.
The following Saturday, 2 February, Somerset East police arrested an 18 year old suspect for dealing in drugs after an information- driven operation. On receiving this information, the members went to “old location “ in Somerset East , where they recovered 20 Mandrax tablets with a value of R 1600, 42 tik straws worth R 2 100, and an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect was arrested.
