ADENDORP NEWS - A small-town café is certainly one of the places where the owners know all the residents and friendships are built.
For Richard and Veronica Williamson, their little Indraf Café in Adendorp is the place where they not only sell everyday necessities, but they and their customers enjoy a chat with nearly every visit to the shop. Well, it is more than just a shop.
They are also the local post office agents, with the original old-time signage and post box still in place.
For them, everybody walking in is just as good as family.
Veronica grew up in Adendorp. Richard, known in Adendorp as 'Spyker', grew up in Graaff-Reinet, where he later worked as an apprentice at Kudu Motors. That was in the late sixties, when he met Veronica.
The two were introduced by a friend, and reverent Willem Johannes du Toit sealed the deal. The couple has been married for 45 years and running the store for the last 25 year.
Richard said they originally bought the place as their house, but saw the potential of transforming the entrance room into a café. From there, it became the local post office and is still the place where residents pop in for a get-together.
Both Richard and Veronica can keep you busy for ages with stories from years ago. These include the day that it snowed in Adendorp, and when the small town had its own butchery, bottle store, municipality and much more.
A favourite story includes the day that the dam overflowed and Correctional Services had to move the inmates to a higher place of safekeeping because the Sundays River came down in flood.
With these and many more wonderful stories, the Williamsons can keep you busy for quite some time; never without a smile.
