GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The provision of Comfort Boxes is a project of Graaff-Reinet Lions Club, to show a token of sympathy to battered or molested women and children.
Last week, Lions President Gerald Buisman handed over a number of Comfort Boxes to Marie de Vos, CEO of Midland Hospital, to be passed on to victims of abuse at the hospital.
Each of the boxes contain underwear, a flannel, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, biscuits and sweets. For the children, a toy is included, while the adults receive deodorant.
Lions are very active in Graaff-Reinet and have a number of other functions and projects which run throughout the year.
The distribution of trees for township gardens started several years ago, and is proving successful. Food is also collected in conjunction with Pick n Pay for NGOs serving under-privileged sections of the community.
Pamphlets are distributed to local schools highlighting the dangers of drinking while pregnant and foetal alcohol syndrome, bullying, teen sex, and drugs. Helping all ages is Operation Brightsight, a Lions International project, providing spectacles for the under-privileged.
Annual functions include a Buddies sports day for children with handicaps, a diabetes testing day in conjunction with Clicks, a tea party for the elderly, and Christmas carols and gifts at Midland Hospital.
Fundraising is ongoing, and at the moment, Lions are looking for donations in cash or kind towards Comfort Boxes or tree planting. These can be made through Brian Hough at Die Smous in Somerset Street.
