GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The esteemed former headmaster of Union Preparatory School, Bruce Cumming, has passed away. Cumming served the school from 1990 to 1997.
According to a Facebook post by the school, Cumming was not merely an educator; he was a beacon of inspiration and a pillar of support for countless students.
His devotion to shaping young minds extended beyond the classroom, reaching the sports field and the dormitories of Herby Arnott House, where he served as a dedicated hostel master alongside his wife, Gillian, who held the position of head matron.
Cumming started his educational journey in Graaff-Reinet in 1990, and quickly embraced the Karoo culture.
He formed enduring friendships with members of the community and lived out his passion for road running, becoming an integral part of the local running club.
Upon retirement to Knysna in 1998, Cumming continued to live a fulfilling life. His days were spent fishing, enjoying braais, and finding solace in the diverse birdlife in his garden.
Known for his warm personality, a twinkle in the eye and infectious laughter, he had a unique ability to light up any room.
To his family, he was not only a loving and dedicated husband but also a supportive father. His legacy goes beyond familial bonds, resonating through the lives of students he mentored and the broader community he touched.
Cumming's passion for education, commitment to excellence, and easygoing nature left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
