NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS - A replica of a world famous French labyrinth is nearing completion in the very heart of the Karoo - right here in the artistic village of Nieu-Bethesda.
The labyrinth, a copy of the one at Chartres Cathedral in France is being constructed in memory of the late William Price, who took his own life in Berlin on 10 January 2018 at the age of 28.
Gregg Price owns a property in Nieu Bethesda and as William grew up in South Africa, he passed through the village many times on family holidays. His father Gregg decided to honour his son under the blue Karoo sky.
Gregg took a decision to build the Labyrinth shortly after the death of his son, a mechanical engineer working for Apple in San Francisco.
The Cathedral of Chartres labyrinth is set into the floor stones in the nave of the cathedral. "It is peaceful, it symbolises freedom and you can meditate while walking the labyrinth," Gregg told the Advertiser.
The labyrinth in Nieu Bethesda should be ready in December.
But building the beautiful formation was no simple task. Gregg and his current wife Nicola completed a course at the Cathedral in France and they are now qualified as labyrinth facilitators to take groups on tours.
Work on the labyrinth on the corner of Martin and Grave streets started in July last year and it should open on 14 December this year.
"The pathway will be free to use," Gregg said. "We will also take small groups on tours, explaining the meaning of a labyrinth."
