KAROO NEWS - Traditional Khoisan leaders and the Eastern Cape Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) embarked on an awareness campaign in Graaff-Reinet on 11 February, to explain the rights of the Khoisan to communities.
These rights are contained in a bill signed by President Cyril Ramaphosa - Act 3 of 2019.
The traditional leaders who joined Cogta were Chief Bekkies !Xam (Boesman), Marcello Florus (Khoi), Jasmina Stuurman (Korana), Goaxoab Kai Anib (Korana Provincial Leader of the Royal House) and Goaxoab !Kora Hennings (Nama).
Following the roadshow in Graaff-Reinet, the leaders had a meeting in the Alex Laing Hall. They also visited Makhanda, Patensie, Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage as part of their Eastern Cape awareness campaign.
According to Goaxoab Kai Anib, the amended bill emphasises that traditional leaders must be represented at national, provincial as well as local government level.
