KAROO NEWS - Remember today is 5 November — residents are advised to keep their pets safe from those celebrating Guy Fawkes Night with fireworks or crackers.
“Many pets are terrified of fireworks, and will put themselves in harm’s way to escape the noise, which they perceive as danger,” explains Hillary Chaplin of the Graaff-Reinet SPCA.
Chaplin advises that, where possible, pet owners stay home with their pets this evening, keep them indoors, and to close the doors, windows and curtains. Pet owners can turn on the TV and provide some form of entertainment to distract their pets, such as toys.
“If you know beforehand that your pet will become terrified, consult your veterinarian today for a safe tranquillizer,” Chaplin adds.
Collars, tags and microchipping is also important, in case pets do escape.
“Tomorrow, please be on the lookout for strays or injured animals who did escape. We are on call 24-hours to collect animals who are lost or injured,” Chaplin concluded.
