KAROO NEWS - Sheraan Souls (20) and Duncan Makhanda (19), were handed down sentences of five-years imprisonment on Monday 14 October, after they robbed a 44-year-old hitchhiker near Adendorp, who was on his way in the direction of Somerset East.
The robbery took place on 10 May at about 4pm.
According to Police Spokesperson, Capt Bradley Rawlinson, the robbers were armed with knives when they robbed and attacked the victim.
Hennie Pienaar, a resident of Adendorp, told the Advertiser he saw the incident happened. "They grabbed the man, pinned him to the ground and robbed him."
Pienaar said he immediately alerted the rural security forum. "They were there within minutes and helped the police to arrest the suspects."
According to Pienaar, residents of Adendorp always had to drive their domestic workers home, because they were robbed in the vicinity of the place where the hitchhiker robbery took place. He told the Advertiser that, after the robbers were arrested, the attacks on their workers nearly stopped. "We still have to see that they get home safe, but the situation is much better."
Graaff-Reinet Police Deputy Cluster Commander, Col Jonathan van Rheede, commended Det W/O Gys Van Gent and Pienaar for his commitment and dedication in ensuring that the two men were arrested and justice prevailed.
