GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — A dramatic incident took place on the N9 near the Waste Transfer Station outside Graaff-Reinet early last Friday evening when a driver attempted to drive through a police roadblock, injuring one traffic officer.
At approximately 18:00 a silver VW Polo failed to stop when indicated to do so by traffic officers just outside Aberdeen, during a routine check at the intersection of the N9 and the R61 to Beaufort West.
This led to a high-speed chase by the traffic officers and police on the N9 towards Graaff-Reinet.
After calling ahead, the road was blocked by Graaff-Reinet traffic officers by the turn-off to the Waste Transfer Station, using state vehicles.
The driver of the Polo did not stop, but drove through the roadblock, colliding with one traffic officer.
During the incident, shots were fired by the traffic officers at the Polo, and they managed to stop the Polo by shooting the rear tyres.
The driver then jumped out of the Polo using the left front passenger door, and jumped over the fence, escaping into the bushes. The police launched a search in the bushes opposite the Waste Transfer Station, and the driver was found.
He was arrested for attempted murder as a result of hitting the traffic officer and failing to stop. Cases have been opened against the Polo driver, and the traffic officers involved in the shooting. The investigation is still in progress in both cases.
