GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Thirty-seven excited Union Grade 5s set off on Monday morning, August 21, for the Oudtshoorn district.
Stopping at a Farm Stall called “Doornkraal”, just outside De Rust, they stretched their legs and enjoyed a packed picnic lunch.
They arrived at the Wildlife Ranch in Oudtshoorn where the guide took them through the different sections, sharing interesting information.
Among others, they saw the fearsome crocodiles, huge white lions, white tiger, cheetahs and even leopards. The porcupines were grumpy and aggressive and the snakes were scary. There were dwarf kangaroos and emus, exotic birds, vultures, cute meerkats and much more.
Leaving the Wildlife Ranch they made their way to their accommodation at Cango Mountain Resort. They unpacked, settled in and explored what would be their home for two nights. The first night was full of excitement and a delicious supper.
Tuesday morning was rainy and cold and after breakfast, they headed for Wilgewandel Holiday Farm.
Here the Grade 5s were divided into two teams and the teams selected their own leaders. The groups learned about pioneering and had to survive as the San people did long ago. They had five tasks which taught them five values: faith, respect, perseverance, patience and courage.
Thereafter the children took part in a challenging, muddy obstacle course. It began to rain and so sadly the rides and games were cancelled. All the learners then enjoyed a wors roll, chips, and a juice. A ceremony was held and some certificates were awarded.
Next up was an afternoon visit to the Cango Ostrich Farm, but they first had to go and change into dry, warm clothes.
At the Ostrich Farm, the children were taught interesting facts about ostriches. Some children received a hug from the big bird and all the children stood on ostrich eggs to demonstrate how strong they are.
After that they headed home to play and just relax. The group had an early supper of hamburgers and salad and then they held a talent show and prizes were awarded.
After a busy day, it was lights out at 9pm.
They were up early on Wednesday morning and after breakfast packed up and headed for the magnificent Cango Caves. Their tour guide taught them about the discovery and history of the cave, stalactites and stalagmites.
On their return trip, they stopped once again at the Doornkraal Farm Stall and enjoyed the chicken pies and juice they had prepared for the group. It was truly an exciting excursion that all had enjoyed a great deal.
