GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - It was with heavy hearts that the last remaining members of Graaff-Reinet Lions Club decided to close the club. Dwindling membership, ageing members, high international dues and the passing of the service club craze led to this decision.
The Lions is the biggest charity in the world and continues to do amazing work where there are citizens who are keen to belong and can give their money and time.
Graaff-Reinet Lions has contributed to the community life of Graaff-Reinet for over 40 years. Many residents have been members over the years. The Lions thank them for their service to the people of the town. Also to the businesses and individuals who contributed to the Lions making it possible to reach many in the community.
Many disadvantaged people received spectacles free or cheaply through the worldwide Lions Brightsight project.
They also thank Minnaar Optometrists for their help and contributions over many years.
Lions supported preschools and children with challenges. Buddies Day provided the handicapped and the able-bodied with an opportunity to share and play together.
They also thank the Kroonvale Primary staff and learners. The poster competition gave young teenagers a rare chance to express their feelings in art. The aged were entertained to tea and meals.
Hundreds of boerboon trees were donated to residents in Asherville and Mandela Park and despite the drought, these trees are doing well. Comfort Boxes were given to the abused.
At Christmas, the Lions distributed gifts to Midland Hospital patients and sang carols with the staff. The parcels will be given again this year.
The remaining club funds have been distributed to KAMVA, Khanyisa, the SPCA and Camdeboo Hospice and the bank account closed. Any other funds coming in will be given to the same charities.
Many Graaff-Reinetters have enjoyed the Lions Christmas cakes. These are still available now at R90 from Die Smous or phone 060 318 4492.
