GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - There were 33 new cases opened in Graaff-Reinet last week, including murder, robbery, no less than 12 of theft, burglaries, fraud, and stock theft.
The murder occurred on 30 November at about 23:00. Two young men, aged 21 and 22, were drinking together when an argument broke out between them.
The younger man then stabbed the victim in the neck using a knife, and he died from his wounds. The 21 year old has been arrested, and the investigation is continuing.
Another man was arrested for attempted murder, after he was caught red-handed trying to steal items from the complainant’s premises. The complainant tried to apprehend the suspect, but was stabbed, again with a knife, in the struggle, and the suspect ran away. The incident took place in Queen Street on 30 November at about 20:50. The suspect was later arrested, and the case is under further investigation.
On 30 November, at about 17:00, the complainant’s cell phone was stolen from him, as well as cash he had on his person. This incident took place in Asherville, and the suspect is known to complainant. He has not yet been arrested.
At 12:10 on 26 November, the complainant’s cell phone was taken out of her handbag at Standard Bank, her workplace, by an unknown suspect. The value of the phone is R6 000.
A quantity of wire and 47 wooden poles, with a total value of almost R3 000, was stolen at Border 4 of Sanparks, on 27 November.
The next incident of theft took place at 18:00 on 27 November at a supermarket in Church Street. According to the complainant, the suspect took five packets of meat, worth R250, from the fridge and ran away with it.
Jewellery to the value of R15 000was stolen a house at Donkin Street at about 10:30 on 27November.
At 10:15 on 23November, the complainant in the next theft case sent an amount of R1 500 to someone who called her and asked for help after this person’s son committed suicide. When the complainant asked for her money back, the suspect did not know anything about the money.
Blue patio netting, to the value of R10 000, was stolen from the local mortuary in Albertyn Street. This incident occurred between 16:00 and 19:30 on 28 November.
At 06:00 on 1 December, two brothers were in an altercation with each other. The suspect threw stones at the victim, and took R300 from him, as well as breaking his cell phone. The total value involved is R1 300. The suspect is known, but has not yet been arrested.
In another case, shade cloth to the value of R400 was taken between 29 November and 30 November. Pliers were used to cut a fence, and ten fence poles worth R1 700 were taken in a different case on 30 November. There is a possible suspect, but the case is still under investigation.
A woman’s cellphone was stolen by her son in Asherville on 23 November, and he then sold it to an unknown buyer. The value of the cell phone is R2 000.
A fence at the children’s park in Asherville was stolen sometime between 30 November and 3 December. The value of the fence is R2 500.
In the final theft case, which took place at 19:00 on 3 December in Cypress Grove, the complainant, went to activate the alarm for his shop. When he came back, he saw that his stock of coffee and confectionery, valued at R1 600, had been stolen.
There were seven residential burglaries, and one business burglary.
In the first case, in Geluksdal, a house was broken into between 18:40 and18:45 on 28 November. A door was forced open, and crockery, vehicle head lamps and tools, all to the value of R2760, were stolen.
The same method of entry was used at a house in uMasizakhe, sometime between 23:00 on 28 November and 07:00 the next day. The complainant’s ID document, a DVD player and other goods were stolen, all to the value of R8 000.
In another incident in uMasizakhe on 30 November, the complainant left her home at about 07:30 to visit a friend. On her return at 08:00 on 1 December, she noticed that the gate was open, as well as the front door. When she looked around in her house, she found her microwave, value R1000, was missing. There is a possible suspect, but the case is still under investigation and no arrests have yet been made.
A bicycle worth R2 400 was taken from the storeroom of a house in Bourke Street, between 14:00 on 1 December and 10:00 the next morning. According to the complainant, the storeroom’s padlock was broken off with an unknown object to gain entry.
At about 13:15 on 30 November, a screwdriver was used to open the door of a house in Geluksdal, and an amount of R4 500 was stolen. There are possible suspects, but case is still under investigation.
Whilst a man was asleep, somebody broke into his house in uMasizakhe at about 05:15 on 3 December and stole his television. The value of the set is R3 500.
Yet another residential burglary took place in uMasizakhe, sometime between 14:30 on 1 December and 08:40 on 3 December. According to the complainant, his door was forced open to gain entrance and clothing and food with a total value of R1 500 were taken.
The business burglary took place at the SPCA. When the complainant arrived on the property at 06:00 on 28 November, he found the padlock to the premises broken and tools to the value of R20 000 missing. One arrest has been made, but case is still under investigation.
There were three cases of fraud opened.
In the first, according to the complainant a total amount of R1 640 was transferred from her Capitec Bank account by an unknown suspect on 28 November at 09:00.
The next incident took place between 21 November at 10:40 and 28 November at 15:00. The complainant saw an advertisement about shoes that were for sale and deposited an amount of R2 200 into the suspect’s account at Capitec Bank in Caledon Street. She later discovered that the advertisement was a fraud, and no shoes were delivered.
The final fraud case occurred on 30 November at about 15:55. The complainant was trying to withdraw money at an ATM, and then got a message on his phone that an amount of R5 000 had been withdrawn from his account at Engen Garage.
In a case of theft out of a motor vehicle, a vehicle’s bonnet and doors were forced open with an unknown object, and a trolley jack and battery stolen with a value of R1 540. The incident occurred in Church Street on 30 November between 07:00 and 13:00.
There were four cases of malicious damage to property, two of which involved people under the influence of liquor.
On 24 November at about 00:40 the complainant was helping people at a tavern when he saw two men throwing bottles and pool balls and breaking glasses. These two were chased out of the tavern and they then threw empty beer bottles at the back window of the complainant’s Toyota Avanza and broke it. The value of the broken window is R2 670.00. The suspects are known by their nicknames, but have not yet been arrested.
The second case happened on 1 December between 17:45 and 18:00, when the complainant’s son, who was heavily under the influence of liquor, broke items in the residence, as well as smashing the vehicle’s windscreen with a hockey stick. The total damage is R4 000. The suspect has been arrested.
Copper pipes worth R2 000 were removed from a property in Munnik Street som time between 5 November and 3 December.
On December at 13:15, the suspect threw stones at the complainant’s house in Kroonvale and caused damage to his property amounting to R400. The suspect is known, but not yet arrested.
A man was arrested after he was seen loading a plastic crate and plastic bag on the back of a bakkie at the Department of Roads and Transport at 01:15 on 1 December. Upon investigation, it was found that rolls of copper wire and copper pipe fittings were loaded onto the vehicle, valued at R1800. The suspect has been arrested.
The final case in this extremely busy week is one of stock theft. Sometime between 17:00 on 2 December and 12:00 on 3 December, two goats worth R2 000 were stolen out of the grazing camp at the farm Grasrand. The omplainant has a possible suspect in mind, but no arrests have been made yet.
