GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - After some welcome rain on Friday to dampen the dust, Saturday dawned bright and clear for the annual Christmas Fair at St James' Church in Graaff-Reinet.
As always, the event was well supported by the Graaff-Reinet community, with many residents of neighbouring towns also taking the opportunity to stock up on Christmas presents.
Organisers Felicity Minnaar and Evette Holmes planned the event meticulously, allocating ample space for the 44 stalls, and managed to attract a variety of interesting vendors.
Several charities and community organisations were represented, particularly with food stalls, while others sold bric-a-brac.
Some fascinating craft items were for sale from private sellers, including crocheted and knitted goods, wire work, handmade cards and frames.
The team of the Graaff-Reinet Cancer Association who were cooking breakfast the whole morning are from left: Nellie Pienaar, Tweet de la Harpe and Hilary Palme.
Minnaar was very pleased that there were three young stallholders this year, for the first time. Leila Marais had beautifully potted spekboom plants, Taitha Loubser offered activities for children, and Lexi Gentry and friends organised carnival games. Little boys just loved putting their hands into the nostrils of a giant red nose!
"We were delighted with the festive stalls, and the wonderful happy atmosphere," said Minnaar.
"We are grateful to all the stall holders as well as all who supported the Christmas Fair - it does not make money for the church, but the idea is to give something back to the community for all their support to St James' Church throughout the year."
Profits will be distributed to deserving beneficiaries before Christmas.
