GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - In a tragic weekend for festival goers and people on their way to spend time with family and loved ones, 11 deaths were recorded the past weekend on roads surrounding Graaff-Reinet.
In two of the accidents eight people died in head-on collisions.
On Thursday morning 12 December, at about 2am, four people were declared dead on the scene in a head-on collision on the N10 between Cradock and Graaff-Reinet.
The next morning at 1.20am, the first of four fatal accidents occurred in the Aberdeen police serving area, when four people died as a white Toyota Etios and a minibus collided with each other, 70km from Aberdeen on the R61 to Beaufort West.
On Monday at about 1.35am, a man aged 34 and a woman aged 40 died on the scene, when a minibus hit them on the R61 between Graaff-Reinet and Aberdeen.
Police spokesperson, captain Bradley Rawlinson said the fatal accident happened as a taxi collided with a kudu. Another taxi stopped across the scene, where after two passengers crossed the road and a third taxi hit them.
The same morning, at approximately 5.25am, a minibus taxi transporting 24 passengers overturned on the R61 between Aberdeen and Beaufort West. One of the passengers died on the scene. The remaining injured passengers were transported to Midland Hospital.
In all four cases the police are investigating culpable homicide dockets.
