KAROO NEWS - Posting fake news is a criminal offence. This was recently reiterated by local police spokesperson, Capt Bradley Rawlinson, after they noticed a concerning increase in the amount of fake news that is posted on various social media platforms.
"The police Sarah Baartman District would like warn that such misinformation is not only reckless, but irresponsible and unacceptable. These utterances are clearly aimed at causing harm and is condemned in the strongest possible way.
"Any person who spreads false information or fake news is guilty of an offence and may be prosecuted," warned Rawlinson.
Readers are advised to assess a situation and to contact the Graaff-Reinet police station on 049 807 1106, 049 807 1116 or 10111 before making any assumptions on social media.
"We appeal to anyone who has any information on any person responsible for the creation and spreading of false or fake news to report such a person," said Rawlinson.
