GRAAFF-REINET NEWS- Residents are saddened by the news of the closure of Die Smouse, the antique shop at 37 Bourke Street.
This very popular emporium was known for its welcoming ambience – a place where people could stroll in, meet Brian Hough and look at all the sought-after antiques.
Anyone who knows the history of the Karoo will have encountered the story of the Jewish pedlars or smouse who travelled from town to town peddling and bartering goods.
Hough could never resist a bargain at auctions and bought collectables such as silverware, glassware, china and jewellery.
Hough and his life partner, Johan Maarschalk, will not be moving to greener pastures, but will be selling the complete business.
"In 2012 I was able to purchase a larger shop and further developed the business into a collection of collectables. If I am not able to sell all the stock in my shop before the closure on 31 January, I will be donating it to Hospice," said Hough.
He mentioned that he had been a member of Hospice and would continue with his calling to Hospice.
Hough was ever grateful for the support while doing business in Graaff-Reinet.
