GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The DA in the Dr Beyers Naudé Constituency hosted an amazing Women's Day event in Kroonvale last Tuesday.
Guest speaker Nikita Foord, a local attorney, addressed the community on the benefits of having a will, issues around title deeds, house transfers and women's rights when dealing with gender-based violence.
Samantha Graham-Maré, DA MP and Dr Beyers Naudé Constituency Leader, engaged with the community on issues related to substance abuse and shared the pledge of the DA in Dr Beyers Naudé Municipality to work with other stakeholders to address these issues.
In this regard, the DA undertook to:
- assist with the dissemination of information whenever educational programmes are implemented in the municipal area,
- raise awareness during their events of the impact of drug and alcohol abuse on families and the community at large,
- support and promote adherence to the laws governing the sale and distribution of alcohol,
- initiatives aimed at curbing the distribution and purchase of drugs by assisting the SAPS whenever possible,
- support victims and family members of substance abusers by referring them to victim support centres and shelters when intervention is needed,
- support the work of the Local Drug Action Committee in raising awareness of substance abuse at schools and among the youth,
- supporting initiatives aimed at protecting victims of gender-based violence and
- work with the community to find creative ways to address the social ills that allow substance abuse to flourish.
- Graham-Maré also introduced the DA Provincial Leader, Nqaba Bhanga, who addressed the community on several pressing issues.
The event closed with a handover of crocheted blankets to some of the elderly ladies. These blankets were donated to Councillor Joy Williams by Dallis Graham. After the event, attendees were treated to a lovely meal.
Graham-Maré accompanied the DA Councillors to a meeting and some oversight visits with Bhanga. "It turned out to be a stunning event," says Graham-Maré. "A full but rewarding Women's Day."
The guest speakers at the event is Samantha Graham-Maré, Nqaba Bhanga and Nikita Foord.
