GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - During January, the Camdeboo Sterilsation Initiative (CSI) joined forces with the Graaff-Reinet SPCA for another mass sterilisation campaign.
CSI arranged for the vets and sponsorship, whilst the SPCA staff did the ground work of sourcing and transporting the patients, plus providing a venue.
A total of four male cats, six female cats, two male dogs and 15 female dogs were sterilised on the day.
One of the female dogs treated was in the very early stages of a pregnancy with 11 puppies, and the veterinary team was very pleased to have treated her in time to prevent more unwanted pups.
The bulk of the funding came from a long-time supporter of CSI from Johannesburg. Lorraine du Plessis asked her friends to donate to CSI in lieu of presents for her 70th birthday, and her generosity (and that of her friends) made this event possible.
Thanks are also due to the team of Dr Desmond Stafford, his assistant Suzie Cato, Dexter (their dog) and Michael Mabena their helper, from Avatar Vets in Johannesburg. Dr Des worked tirelessly and operated for a straight eight hours!
Teamwork was very much in evidence on the day. Busisiwe Saba from the Eastern Cape Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform gave a much needed helping hand, and SPCA Inspector Hillary Chaplin and her staff worked hard all day.
Those who were working so hard were very grateful to Tess from Avondrust Guest House for preparing and sponsoring refreshments for the vets, helpers and staff. Lukas from Oasis Water also donated 24 bottles of water to quench the thirst in the scorching Karoo heat!
Greg Kappers, a CSI team member, lent encouragement and support, and took photographs on the day.
“This means a lot less homeless, stray and abandoned pups and kitties for 2019 thanks to this combined effort from the teams, and to our faithful supporters and donators” said a grateful Erma Voigt of CSI.
