GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Horseshoe Clinic in Graaff-Reinet hosted a breast cancer awareness day on 16 October, where members of the public were invited to learn more about cancer detection and treatment. The day was in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
"Never give up because there are so many success stories," was sister Geraldine Cane's message to those diagnosed with breast cancer.
According to her, all women must do breast examinations monthly, and women older than 40 must regularly undergo mammogram screenings.
"It is possible to treat cancer, which is why it's important to catch it in time," explained Cane. If women find lumps, discolouration or discharge other than milk from their breasts, they are invited to visit the clinic, where breast examinations are available and further treatment or referrals can be discussed.
On the day, Graaff-Reinet resident Lettie Taljaard also spoke to those in attendance about how she overcame breast cancer. Her story of perseverance and courage was especially inspiring, seeing as she was diagnosed shortly after her husband's death. "With God and your loved ones by your side, you can overcome your diagnosis," she said.
Local Hospice Manager, Susan van der Linde, encouraged patients to know their family history, to know their bodies, and to know that cancer can be treated. "The clinic is here to offer their services, and at Hospice we provide holistic care for those diagnosed with cancer, as well as support for their family members," she said.
Clinic staff members Lisa Khuhaza and Zimasa Biterhout explained what breast cancer is and how it can be treated, while Ntando Sodladla spoke about prevention and treatment of prostate cancer. Sister Lizanne Opperman thanked the speakers and patients for attending. "Thank you for being a part of this day, we hope you share the message of breast cancer awareness to your friends and family," she said.
