KAROO NEWS - A consignment of 50 000 face masks was delivered to the Sarah Baartman District Municipality (SBDM) on 24 June.
These masks are a donation from the Jincheng Municipality in China. The two municipalities have a longstanding relationship which is aimed at supporting each other to improve service delivery in both municipalities.
The shipment of the masks from China to SBDM was sponsored by Naspers as part of their commitment to assisting in reducing the spread of the coronavirus.
Natasha Peterson, Communications Officer for SBDM, said the masks have been approved by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) as suitable for use by the public and have met the necessary safety standards.
"As the infection rate of Covid-19 positive cases increases throughout the country, it is imperative that every individual needs to wear a face mask whenever they leave their homes. These masks will thus be donated to various organisations in the Sarah Baartman District to ensure that community members have a means of protecting themselves from the coronavirus," said Peterson.
Although wearing a face mask is imperative, the SBDM also continue to encourage people to maintain social distancing, to refrain from social visits, to wash their hands regularly or sanitise regularly. "The power to defeat the coronavirus is in our hands," Peterson added.
The masks have not yet been distributed.
