GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Last week, the Graaff-Reinet and District Cancer Association's members gathered at Laer Volkskool's Kewertjie for their 2017 annual general meeting.
The meeting was well attended with almost 60 supporters present.
The ‘business’ portion of the evening saw the election of a new committee, as well as remarks by the Association's chairman Liz Savage.
The evening highlighted the success the Association has witnessed over the past year.
During her remarks, Savage provided an overview of a few of the organisation's many services they voluntarily render to those affected by cancer in the Graaff-Reinet, Aberdeen, Nieu-Bethesda, Jansenville and Pearston districts.
This includes assistance with travel expenses and accommodation costs, food parcels and food supplements, sleepwear, flowers and the like.
Alarming statistics were shared at the meeting regarding the number of cancer patients in this area alone but it was heartening for all to hear of a large number of survivors too.
The guest speaker for the gathering was Dr Ben van Tonder of Graaff-Reinet's Dutch Reformed Church who addressed the members about the topic of 'death'.
Despite the sombre subject, the discourse was found to be truly inspiring by all those present.
Additionally, the members of the Association's executive committee was elected, who will serve until the 2018 AGM.
Liz Savage was re-elected as chairman, she will be supported by Maxie van Aswegan (vice-chairman), Tweet de la Harpe (secretary), Christa Larson (Treasurer), Linda Charles (assistant treasurer), Margie Parkes (fundraising coordinator) and caregivers Hannatjie Pieterse, Virginia Christoffels, Vaida Sokopo, Elaine Arries and Thandeka Majoka. The evening was capped off with delicious soup and bread which was enjoyed by all those present.
• The Association would like to extend a warm thank-you to the 2016-17 committee for its hard work and leadership, as well as to congratulate and welcome the new committee.
