FOOTBALL NEWS - Camdeboo Football Academy Development Club, based in Masizakhe, Graaff Reinet, is on the path to reaching the prestigious ABC Motsepe League.
Founded in 2012 for ladies' soccer and netball, the club later transitioned to include young boys under the guidance of Coach Xolile Galada.
Their vision was to promote football development in the community and see it evolve into a professional endeavour.
Building from scratch
Galada says the journey began with the u.13 team's victory in the Build It Junior Tournament in 2013, a moment that boosted the club's morale. As the club received its first soccer kit, the players became motivated. Galada continued to nurture and develop the same group of players from u.13 to u.15, exposing them to senior-level competition.
SAB Regional League success
The club's success story continued as they joined the South African Football Association (SAFA) ranks in the Sarah Baartman region. In their first SAB Regional appearance in regional playoffs in 2018/2019, they faced setbacks, but they persevered. By the 2022/2023 season, they reached the Nedbank playoffs, securing second place, which was a significant achievement even though it didn't lead to qualification for the Motsepe League.
New status
Despite setbacks, Galada believed in the potential of his players. In a strategic move, they purchased the status of Thohoyandou Football Club from Bizana, which participates in the provincial Motsepe League. A private donor assisted to secure the deal, marking a historic moment for football in Graaff Reinet.
Economic and social impact
The move to the ABC Motsepe League is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy, particularly in terms of tourism. Galada emphasise that sport is their "gold mine" and can contribute significantly to the development of the local municipality and the private sector. Additionally, football can help address social issues in town, particularly among teenagers.
Building a team
To ensure a competitive team, Camdeboo Football Academy has strengthened its squad with former Premier Soccer League (PSL) players while combining them with young local talent. They've recruited players from outside clubs, some of whom will be housed in Graaff Reinet. The club is actively seeking sponsorships, accommodation, transport, catering, and equipment to support their ambitious project.
Long-term vision
Galada's long-term vision is to reach the Premier Soccer League (PSL) with a team that brings something unique to the table. He stresses the need for competitive players, quality coaching, and a commitment to training. Despite facing challenges like a shortage of playing fields, Camdeboo Football Academy is working closely with the local municipality to secure suitable facilities. They encourage community support and contributions to their project, aiming to make it to the Glad Africa League next season.
Upcoming game
The Camdeboo Football Academy will play against Amavarara FC of Queen's Town in the Nedbank Cup on Saturday 7 October in Komani. The academy invites the community to be their "12th man" and support their journey towards football excellence.
