GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - It was another busy week for Graaff-Reinet SAPS, with 13 serious cases opened.
There were two cases of stock theft in Nieu-Bethesda. Two Merino sheep worth R4 000 were taken from their grazing fields during the night of 9 May, and a further three were slaughtered on Pienaar Farm on the night of 11 May.
A case of fraud was opened after a woman living in Church Street, Graaff-Reinet, was intentionally given incorrect banking details for a Graaff-Reinet business on 13 May. The unknown suspect gave the woman a personal account number, into which she deposited an unknown amount of cash.
A 41 year old woman was knocked over by a car in Tjoksville, Umasizakhe at 19:00 on 8 May. She was standing on the pavement when the red Mazda struck her from behind, causing her to fall. The victim was taken to hospital. A case of reckless and negligent driving was opened, and fortunately the woman was able to give the police the registration number of the vehicle.
There were three residential burglaries reported, one in Umasizakhe and two in Kroonvale.
The first occurred during the night of 7 May. The elderly woman resident was sleeping in her room, and discovered when she woke the next morning that her bedroom window had been forced open, and a 54 cm Telefunken television (valued at R2 500) had been removed from the room. A 24-year old man was later arrested by Graaff-Reinet police.
The second burglary, in Kroonvale, happened late at night on 10 May when the occupant was out. When he arrived home just after midnight he found that a window had been forced open, and a Samsung cellphone and R1 200 in cash were missing.
The suspect is thought to have left through the front door.
The final housebreaking case took place in Fifth Avenue, Kroonvale. When the householder returned home, she discovered that the wooden front door had been forced open, and a gold chain, gold bracelet, a Samsung cellphone and a pair of training shoes had been taken. The total value was given as R5 600.
There were two cases of theft involving vehicles. The battery was taken from a Nissan bakkie parked inside premises in Blom se Kamp during the night of 10 May after the vehicle’s bonnet was forced open. The value of the battery is R1 400. A white Venter trailer, registration number DTJ 474EC had been left parked in Martin Street, Nieu Bethesda, on 6 May. When the owner returned on 9 May he discovered that the trailer, worth R15 000, was missing.
The final two cases of the week are of robbery, with a weapon other than a firearm.
In the first case, the 17 year old complainant reported that he was walking in Vink Street, Kroonvale at 17:40 on 8 May, when a man walked past him as another hit him on the back of his head with a blunt object. When the complainant fell to the ground, the two suspects took his Huawei Y5 cellphone from the pocket of his trousers and ran away. The phone is worth R2 300.
The second robbery took place at the bus shelter by the Collie Koeberg Stadium on the Jansenville road at 15:15 on 10 May.
The 44 year old victim claimed that three men, not known to him, arrived at the bus shelter and started assaulting him, also trying to stab him. When he fell to the ground the suspects took his brown wallet, gold wedding ring, his bank cards and R2 000 in notes . The suspects then ran away after taking the items of value.
