GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Police have asked all residents to please keep away from the part of Caledon Street between the church and Bourke Street, as they are responding to a bomb threat in the area.
The new Ackermans store opened in Caledon Street this morning, and the street was thronging with people and the store packed out with customers looking for bargains.
However at 15:00 in the afternoon it was a very different story, as stores in the area were evacuated. Caledon Street between the Dutch Reformed Church and Bourke Street was cordoned off by SAPS and the traffic police in response to the bomb threat.
The unidentified caller, who phoned the police station at about 14:30, told police that there was a bomb at a shop in that block, and currently the police are busy searching through all the premises in that area. They have asked that people please stay away from the area, not only for their own safety, but also to avoid hindering the police in their search.
Initially people thought that the bomb was in the new Ackermans store, and then Spandau Spar, but police have not confirmed any specific store, just that they are searching all the stores in the area.
Police have also blocked the Church Street near the church.
