ABERDEEN NEWS - Earlier this year, Aberdeen’s Botter Ossies raised over R37 000 for projects in the town after their 25km sponsored walk.
These four ladies are no athletes, but after the success of their inaugural fundraising walk in 2018, they continued their walking regime for fitness, losing a staggering 90kg between them. The walk is now an annual event in Aberdeen.
The funds raised this year were distributed between a local school, Aalwynhof Home for the Aged, animal welfare, two crèches, a church, and a feeding scheme.
A substantial amount was also allocated to cleaning up the town, and Botter Ossie's Umelda van Rensburg has been responsible for this area. During the last month, Wayne Heinse, a casual worker at Van Rensburg’s business, has been employed twice a week to tackle some of the areas on the outskirts of town.
Heinse recently collected 22 bags of rubbish in Jackson Street. He has also worked with Cornelia Cronje and her team of youngsters to clear an area in Rawson Street and has spent some days along the roads into town.
The rubbish is then collected by the municipality from outside Van Rensburg’s shop on Fridays, with the normal business rubbish.

One week, there was an issue when municipal truck workers refused to take 24 bags of rubbish. After an enquiry by the Advertiser, the truck returned the same morning to collect it.
Acting Communications Officer Wilca Smith advised that members of the community should contact the municipal office should there be any refuse other than the normal to be collected.
There is still some funding available, and the Botter Ossies would welcome suggestions from residents of areas of the town that would benefit from their attention. Any sponsorship towards costs for more days for Heinse would also be appreciated.
