GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Graaff-Reinet police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a truck collided with a silver Kia and a scooter, instantly killing the biker, in College Road on the R61 in Graaff-Reinet on Tuesday evening.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Bradley Rawlinson, the 40-year-old biker, identified as Andrew Manel, died at 19:30 on 30 March when he was hit by the Mercedes Benz truck, driven by a 24-year-old municipal sub-contractor. 

The driver, who allegedly attempted to flee the scene, underwent an alcohol test as the police suspected that he may have been driving under the influence.

Manel was declared dead on the scene by Metro EMS emergency personnel and taken to the Graaff-Reinet Mortuary. 

This is the third tragedy to hit to Manel family in the last months as Manel had lost both his parents to Covid-19.

According to an eyewitness, the truck excited the Engen Service Station turning towards Spandauville, when it first hit the Kia travelling in the same direction and then collided with the scooter travelling from Spandauville. 

The deceased was thrown from the scooter, but the scooter got stuck underneath the truck. The truck continued, then stopped, after which the driver allegedly attempted to flee the scene, but he was apprehended. 

The driver was arrested and will appear in the Graaff-Reinet Magistrate's Court soon. The police are awaiting the results of the alcohol test which will form part of the investigation.

The eyewitness says the male Kia driver seemed unharmed, but was in shock.
