ABERDEEN NEWS — There were two cases of housebreaking and theft in Aberdeen town last week, and once again the police are urging residents to take all possible precautions at their homes.
The first break-in occurred at a house in Cathcart Street last Monday night, but a case was only opened with the police on Thursday. A neighbour had seen someone, known to the householder, acting suspiciously at the house on Monday evening.
On Tuesday, the suspect was seen walking home to Lotusville with a large bag, and when he was stopped by the police, they found bank cards belonging to the owner of the house. As a case had not been opened at that stage, the man was allowed to go.However, once a case had been opened, the man was arrested when he was seen walking around town on Friday. It is unclear what else has been taken at this stage. The suspect appeared in court in Aberdeen on Monday, but the case was postponed until Thursday for further investigation. The suspect had gained entry to the house by breaking a window, which did not have any burglar bars.
The second case occurred on Wednesday, when garden equipment, a vacuum cleaner, and garden furniture were stolen from the garage of a house on Jackson Street, as well as washing that was drying on the clothes line. It appears that a small person, probably a child, had got into the garage through a hole made in the wall. There are no suspects at this stage, and none of the goods has yet been recovered.
The final case is of theft under false pretences. A local man bought a second-hand bakkie from a man in Graaff-Reinet and did some work on the vehicle. There was still a small amount outstanding on the purchase, and the previous owner contacted the buyer saying that he was going to take the vehicle back as he had had a better offer. He came and took the bakkie, promising to refund the Aberdeen man the amount he had already paid. However, the buyer has not received any money back and has been unable to contact the seller, who does not answer his phone. The case is still under investigation.
