GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Hundreds of Graaff-Reinetters flocked to Burger Inn on Friday evening for the start of the Graaff-Reinet Running Club’s annual Neon Street Mile, which was a roaring success.
The Club hosted this colourful street mile (1.6km) for the second year in a row to the enjoyment of the fit and almost-fit alike on June 2.
The fastest time run by a male entrant was that of Sipho November who finished in a time of 4 minutes and 45 seconds. He was followed by Jasson Holloway (6:28), Alfred Makwye (6:31) and Hlumisa Kalipe (7:33).
The first female participant to cross the finish line was Madel Piek (6:27), followed by Le Kayla Booysen (8:06), Thabisa Pakada (8:34), Simazo Bantom (9:42) and Liza Flemmer (10:89.
Although there was some competitiveness among the front runners, most of the 236 entrants either jogged or walked the distance at a leisurely pace.
The Graaff-Reinet Running Club is already looking forward to planning next year's event and hopes that this race will steadily grow into a gigantic community event.
“Without a doubt, we will do it again next year. The evening went very well," said the Club's chairperson, Rozelle Köhne.
"We'd also like to extend our thanks to Burger Inn for selling hot dogs prior to the start of the mile, to the ladies of the ACVV for the delicious pancakes sold at the end of the mile and to Hestie van der Mescht of Polka for all the treats they prepared," Köhne concluded.
Happy participants.
