GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — On Friday, January 20, twenty-five learners from Grades 5, 6 and 7 joined the Union High School Eco Club.
They received their Eco Warrior badges and kicked off the term serving their community by picking up litter along the route to their destination.
They visited “Farmer Faan”, Fanie Bezuidenhout’s organic vegetable garden.
Bezuidenhout is a senior Geography educator at UHS and taught the children about his mobile weather station, soil types and how to test for acidity or alkalinity, the four important nutrients of good soil and crop rotation.
They also learnt about sources of water and boreholes.
The following vegetables were harvested during their visit: cucumber, spinach, butternut, pumpkin, radish and onion.
This visit covered aspects of Healthy Living, Biodiversity and Local and Global Issues (food scarcity).
