GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - As part of their annual Heritage Tour across South Africa, the 5FM 5Drive team arrived in Graaff-Reinet on Friday 25 September, and say they had an incredible time exploring the historic town.
"There is so much history and the people are so friendly," said presenter, Nick Hamman. Hamman is joined on the tour, which kicked off on 5 September, by Nadia Romanos (news presenter), Bibi Mbangula (traffic) and Jude van Wyk (sport).
In celebration of Heritage Month, the team aims to spend two days in each of the country's nine provinces, where they broadcast live while taking part in different cultural experiences. The tour started in the Northern Cape and will end in the Western Cape.
"I'm so happy we visited Graaff-Reinet," Romanos told the Graaff-Reinet Advertiser. "It's a beautiful, peaceful little town that felt like we were stepping into a piece of history."
Romanos said the team walked around town, visiting several shops and restaurants, and ended the day with a trip to the Valley of Desolation to catch the sunset. "The view was spectacular and like nothing I have ever seen before!" she enthused.
Traffic presenter Bibi Mbangula and news presenter Nadia Romanos have a jolly good time at the Valley of Desolation.
Hamman added that he will be telling all his friends and listeners to explore Graaff-Reinet when they get a chance.
"The town is a world-class tourist destination," he said. "It was great to see a sense of life and energy in the town."
A few highlights of the team's tour include Augrabies Falls in the Northern Cape, snorkelling in Sodwana Bay in KwaZulu-Natal, a night drive in the Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga, boerekos in Parys in the Free State, and of course, the Valley in Graaff-Reinet.
When the Advertiser spoke to the team on Tuesday, they were in Addo, following a brief stop in Makhanda. From there, they were planning to travel to Oudtshoorn, with only the Western Cape left on their list of provinces.
5FM's visit has just confirmed what Graaff-Reinet residents already know: this is a great town!
