ABERDEEN NEWS - Jan Jantjies has lived in his current home in Aberdeen for approximately 50 years without having legal proof of ownership such as a title deed.
According to Jan this caused him great concern as he feared his grandchildren might be left stranded if he were to pass away. Today, though, Jan is in possession of his title deed and feels assured that his descendants will have a place to call home after Human Settlements MEC Mvoko handed over 558 title deeds to community members in Aberdeen in the Eastern Cape on 20 July 2018.

A title deed is a legal document which confirms the legal ownership of a home and property. It gives the home owner secure protection in the legal form. This security means that people like Jan can rest peacefully knowing that his property can be transferred to his grandchildren when he passes away.
During the handover ceremony MEC Mvoko said that “people were living in houses for 50 years and having nothing to show for it. That’s why today is a day of happiness, we are restoring the dignity of people. We are not here doing favours, the community deserve this and it is their responsibility to protect their title deeds and keep it safe.’
Meina Van Rooyen another recipient who received her title deed said that she feels so blessed to experience this day as she has lived in this house for 51 years already.
Amidst all the excitement of title deeds being handed over MEC Mvoko along with local members of council from the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality (DBNLM) visited Anna Ninge. Anna is 72-years-old and although her house was meant to be built many years ago, it unfortunately never happened. Anna and her family has been living in a shack on the property her house was meant to build on.
MEC Mvoko promised Anna that by Christmas 2018 she would no longer be living in a shack as the Department of Human Settlements will be building her house on the property. Anna cried as she heard the exciting news and said that God has answered her prayers.
